Directed by Raymond Longford, The Sentimental Bloke (1919) is a masterpiece of Australian silent cinema. Based on C.J. Dennis's verse novel, it follows Bill, a Sydney larrikin who abandons his rowdy life of gambling and drinking after falling for Doreen, a pickle factory worker. Renowned for its naturalistic acting and use of local slang, the film was a massive commercial hit. Once feared lost, it was restored by the NFSA and remains a definitive cultural touchstone of early Australian identity.
