Released by Monogram Pictures in 1931, The Montana Kid is a classic pre-Code Western directed by Harry L. Fraser. The plot follows cowboy Bill Denton (Bill Cody) as he protects young Andy Burke (Andy Shuford) after his father is murdered by a corrupt saloon owner, Chuck Larson. Larson swindles the family ranch away, forcing Denton to use his wits—and some outlaw tactics—to reclaim the boy's inheritance. It remains a definitive example of early 1930s "Poverty Row" matinee cinema.
