In this 1929 pre-Code drama, Jeanne Eagels stars as Leslie Crosbie, a plantation owner’s wife in Singapore who murders her lover, Geoffrey Hammond. Leslie claims self-defence against attempted rape, but an incriminating letter reveals their torrid affair and her premeditation. To escape conviction, she must buy the letter from Hammond's Chinese mistress for $10,000. Eagels received a posthumous Oscar nomination for her performance, the first in Academy history, before her sudden death that same year.
