After a fire breaks out in an orphanage on New York's Lower East Side, Tim Kelly (Jackie Coogan), a young child, flees. After being defrauded of a patent fortune by some dishonest lawyers, he ends himself seeking asylum with Max (Max Davidson), a lonely junk man who is struggling. Max and little Kelly start off as partners in the bottle and rag company and grow close over time.
