John S. Robertson directed the 1925 American silent comedy Shore Leave, which starred Dorothy Mackaill and Richard Barthelmess. Hubert Osborne's stage drama of the same name served as the inspiration for Shore Leave. From August 8 to December 1922, the Lyceum Theatre hosted 151 performances of the play on Broadway. Barthelmess and Mackaill in the movie were portrayed by James Rennie and Frances Starr in the play.
