According to a review in a movie magazine, Dick Turpin (Mix) was a well-known highwayman in England a few hundred years ago who preyed on the wealthy while aiding the underprivileged. He met Lord Churlton (McCullough) one day, and a short while later, when assisting a ruffian-attacked coach, he discovers that Lady Brookfield (Myers) is inside. She informs him she has to wed Lord Churlton. Dick reveals who he is and promises to help her. When Dick arrives to the inn, he watches Lady Alice disguise herself in men's clothing and sneak out while he makes his getaway following a bold run-in with the guards. They travel to London. Following Lord Churlton, Dick poses as a combatant and enters the ring when it appears that he would be captured. He throws the reward money to the crowd to get away once more as the guards close in. He confesses his love for Alice in the forest. He finds himself surrounded by guards after a needy woman approaches him and requests his assistance. He is sentenced to death and taken to prison. He discovers that his friend Tom King (Hale) has replaced the hangman at the scaffold. Tom advises him to take a break for his freedom and assures him that the audience is behind him. He makes his getaway on Black Bess, his well-known horse, and heads straight for York to save Lady Alice. The guards continue to pursue for days, each one giving out until the final one passes away close to the end of the voyage.
