John Gilbert, Renée Adorée, Hobart Bosworth, Tom O'Brien, and Karl Dane all starred in King Vidor's 1925 silent American war drama The Big Parade. The film, which was written by Laurence Stallings, a World War I veteran, tells the story of a lazy affluent kid who enlists in the US Army's Rainbow Division and is sent to fight in France. He befriends two working-class men, learns about the horrors of trench warfare, and falls in love with a French girl.
Many later war movies, including All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), were greatly affected by the picture, which has been hailed for its realistic portrayal of combat. Considered one of the best movies on World War I, The Big Parade was chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the US National Film Registry in 1992.
