Set in 1830, the film follows the misadventures of an early steam engine train, known as the "Iron Mule," on its inaugural journey. The train encounters various obstacles, including a cow on the tracks, a low tunnel (requiring the smokestack to be removed), and a river crossing accomplished by floating the train on logs. The journey culminates in an ambush by a group of Native Americans.
