The silent film closely follows the plot of the original play. Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up, visits the London nursery of the Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael. He takes them to Neverland where they have adventures with mermaids, a band of Native Americans, and the Lost Boys, while battling the nefarious pirates led by Captain Hook. The movie was celebrated for its special effects and was a critical and commercial success at the time. For decades, the film was thought to be lost until a well-preserved copy was found and restored by the George Eastman House in the 1950s and 1990s. In 2000, it was selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". This version is also notable for inspiring Walt Disney to create the company's 1953 animated adaptation.
