SRISAILAM, ANDHRA PRADESH — In a major move for arachnid conservation, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department has officially launched a scientific survey to protect the Peacock Tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica). Published on April 30, 2026, the initiative aims to map the population of this "rare jewel" within the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR).

The project, backed by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, signals a shift in conservation focus from iconic "megafauna" like tigers to lesser-known, ecologically vital species.

The Conservation Mission

Collaborating with the Eastern Ghats Wildlife Society and the UK-based Wingham Wildlife Park, authorities are working to secure the future of this critically endangered spider.

  • Mapping & Population: The survey will identify the spider's distribution and estimate current population numbers across the NSTR.

  • Habitat Assessment: Experts are evaluating the condition of old-growth deciduous forests, which are essential for this arboreal species.

  • Policy Impact: Data from the survey will directly inform long-term habitat management and state-level protection policies.

Profile: The Gooty Sapphire

The Peacock Tarantula is as mysterious as it is beautiful, with a history dating back to its first scientific record in 1898.

Feature Details
Appearance Striking metallic blue body with intricate yellow and white geometric patterns.
Size Large leg span reaching between 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm).
Behavior A nocturnal ambush predator that lives in tree holes rather than spinning traditional webs.
Range Endemic to a tiny patch of the Eastern Ghats, estimated at less than 100 sq. km.

Why is it in Danger?

The IUCN classifies the Peacock Tarantula as Critically Endangered. Its survival is threatened by three primary factors:

  1. Habitat Loss: Logging and firewood collection destroy the mature trees the spider depends on.

  2. Illegal Pet Trade: Its vibrant sapphire hue makes it highly sought after by international collectors.

  3. Climate Sensitivity: As a specialized species, even minor changes to the forest ecosystem can lead to drastic population declines.

Ecological Importance

While often feared, these tarantulas are crucial "insect managers." By preying on crickets, grasshoppers, and other small bugs, they prevent insect outbreaks and maintain the delicate balance of the Eastern Ghats ecosystem.
