RUIDOSO, NM — A devastating aviation accident before dawn on Thursday, May 14, 2026, has claimed the lives of four individuals and triggered an active wildfire in a remote region of south-central New Mexico.

A Beechcraft King Air 90 fixed-wing medical transport plane, operated by Trans Aero MedEvac, was reported overdue after losing radar and communication contact during a transit flight. Emergency crews tracking the aircraft located the wreckage between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM in the steep, rocky terrain of the Capitan Mountains outside Ruidoso.

Casualties Confirmed

Lincoln County officials confirmed that all four people on board perished in the impact.

  • The Victims: The individuals on board comprised the dedicated flight crew and medical personnel. Their identities are being withheld pending full family notifications.

  • No Patients Aboard: Authorities noted the aircraft was on a positioning mission from the Roswell Air Center to the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport; no patients were being transported at the time of the crash.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, loved ones, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident."

Jason Burns, Lincoln County Manager

Rugged Terrain Challenges First Responders

Reaching the crash site proved exceptionally grueling for local search and rescue teams. Because of the vertical, boulder-strewn topography of the Capitan Mountain range, emergency vehicles were completely blocked, forcing responders to hike the final half-mile on foot through dense brush to secure the scene.

Crash Sparks Spreading Forest Fire

The heat and fuel from the high-impact crash immediately ignited a wildfire in the surrounding Lincoln National Forest.

Driven by dry conditions and high-velocity winds characteristic of mid-May in the region, the blaze expanded swiftly to roughly 35 acres by midday Friday. Local emergency services have teamed up with the U.S. Forest Service, deploying both ground crews and specialized air resources to establish containment lines and prevent the fire from threatening the nearby mountain community of Ruidoso.

Federal Investigations Underway

The cause of the crash remains entirely unknown. Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation to recover the aircraft’s flight logs, review maintenance history, and assess weather factors at the time of the dawn flight.
