"This Will Cost You Dearly": Taliban Minister Slams Pak for Border Turmoil Amid Failed Talks

KABUL/ISLAMABAD — The diplomatic and military tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have reached a new flashpoint, with a senior Taliban official issuing a stark, almost threatening warning to Islamabad over the persistent border turmoil.

Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, the powerful Interior Minister of the interim Taliban government, warned Pakistan that any attempt to "export its internal conflicts" into Afghanistan would come at a heavy price. The blunt remarks follow the recent collapse of peace talks aimed at de-escalating the most serious cross-border clashes since the Taliban took control in 2021.

The Stern Warning: "Don't Test Our Patience"

Speaking publicly, Haqqani sent an unambiguous message directly to Islamabad, focusing specifically on the issue of militant groups, notably the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

  • The Accusation: Haqqani firmly stated, "These are your own problems. Why are they being imposed on us?" He was directly accusing Pakistan of blaming Afghanistan for its internal security challenges.

  • The Threat: The minister warned, "If you bring your problems here and create turmoil, this mistake will cost you dearly." He stressed that while the path of understanding remains open, any further aggression or testing of Afghanistan's patience would be met with a "crushing" response.

  • The Core Issue: Pakistan consistently demands that the Taliban take "clear, verifiable action" against the TTP, which uses Afghan soil to launch attacks. The Taliban, however, insists that the TTP is Pakistan’s domestic security problem and should be resolved within its borders.

Talks Deadlock and Renewed Truce

The latest diplomatic fallout follows the failure of multiple rounds of peace talks, which were mediated by Turkey and Qatar:

  • Istanbul Collapse: After several days of tense negotiations in Istanbul, the talks hit a deadlock, with Pakistan officially announcing that the dialogue had "failed" due to Kabul’s refusal to give assurances against cross-border attacks.

  • Fragile Ceasefire: Despite the diplomatic failure, a fragile agreement has been reached to maintain the ceasefire brokered earlier in Doha. Turkey's Foreign Ministry confirmed that both sides agreed to uphold the truce to prevent the resumption of deadly border violence. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for November 6 to finalize a monitoring and verification mechanism.

  • Military Undercurrents: The political tension is underpinned by recent military exchanges that saw dozens of soldiers and civilians killed on both sides. Pakistan has maintained its right to target militant hideouts, while the Taliban accuses Pakistan of violating its sovereignty through alleged airstrikes.

What's Next?

The public warning from a powerful figure like Sirajuddin Haqqani signals a deepening rift and hardening of positions between the two neighbors. While the ceasefire holds for now, the fundamental issue—Pakistan's demand for action against the TTP—remains unresolved. The ultimatum highlights that Afghanistan is prepared to escalate if its territory is targeted again, turning the fragile border from an active conflict zone into a diplomatic time bomb.
