Stalemate Continues: Jharkhand Student Protests Persist After Second Round of Talks
Ranchi, August 9, 2026 – The ongoing agitation by students in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations shows no sign of abating. A second round of talks between government representatives and student leaders concluded on Saturday without a definitive resolution, leaving the standoff in a state of uncertainty.
The Background
Tensions escalated following the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) declaration of the preliminary results for the 14th Combined Civil Services Examination on July 2. With 2,204 candidates shortlisted for only 103 vacancies, concerns regarding the integrity of the process—compounded by widespread allegations of paper leaks—sparked significant unrest among the 3.5 lakh aspirants who appeared for the exam.
Status of Negotiations
A delegation from the JPSC-JSSC Abhyarthi Nyay Manch met with government officials, including Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Chamra Linda, Deepika Singh Pandey, and Sanjay Yadav, at a guesthouse in Morabadi.
While the student representatives acknowledged that the government heard their grievances, they emphasized that no decision has been reached to withdraw the protests. "Only after a decision is taken [by Chief Minister Hemant Soren] will we move away from the hunger strike and the agitation," stated student representative Chandan Rajak.
The government has urged the student community to submit their suggestions via a dedicated email channel to facilitate further consideration.
On the Ground
The protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium continues to see a growing number of participants. The toll on the protesters has been significant, with several students requiring hospitalization due to deteriorating health during their hunger strike.
The movement has gained momentum with support from various student outfits and political wings, including the JCM, NSUI, and Adivasi Chatra Sangh, all of whom have put forth their own set of demands—ranging from a full CID investigation to the cancellation of specific recruitment exams.
What Comes Next?
Protesters have signaled their intent to continue their agitation, with planned marches toward the state Assembly. As the situation remains fluid, students are awaiting a definitive response from Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s office before deciding on the next course of action.
