Indonesia’s notorious volcanic island, Anak Krakatau, erupted early Sunday morning, sending massive plumes of ash high into the atmosphere and prompting immediate flight cancellations at the country's busiest airport. While the sudden burst of activity created widespread travel disruptions, authorities have confirmed that no casualties or immediate evacuation orders have been issued so far.

What Happened?

Located in the Sunda Strait between the main islands of Java and Sumatra, Anak Krakatau erupted for 30 seconds at 3:53 a.m. local time on Sunday (September 6, 2026). The eruption followed increased activity observed on Saturday by Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG).

Satellite imagery tracked two massive ash clouds originating from the active crater:

 * First Ash Cloud: Reached altitudes of up to 20,000 feet, drifting northeast and heavily impacting parts of the capital city, Jakarta, along with Banten, West Java, and surrounding waters.

 * Second Ash Cloud: Soared to a staggering 50,000 feet, moving westward and northwestward to cover parts of Banten, Lampung, and Bengkulu provinces, the southern Sunda Strait, and stretches of the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra.

Impact on Air Travel

The cascading fallout of volcanic ash forced the temporary suspension of flight operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

As departure boards filled with cancellations, stranded passengers flooded the terminals to seek ticket refunds and reclaim their checked luggage. The aviation authorities continue to monitor air routes closely as winds carry the volcanic debris across the region.

Safety and Precautionary Measures

Fortunately, the nearest human settlements sit more than 16 kilometers away from the volcano, keeping populated areas safe from immediate danger.

However, officials aren’t taking any chances given the volcano's volatile history. Indonesia's Geological Agency has strictly warned residents, tourists, and fishermen to maintain a safety buffer of at least 3 kilometers from the active crater.

A Reminder of a Volatile Past

The sudden eruption has naturally sparked concerns due to Anak Krakatau's dangerous legacy. The explosive collapse of the volcano back in 2018 triggered a devastating tsunami that claimed at least 430 lives across Sumatra and Java.

While Sunday’s eruption was relatively brief and did not trigger a tsunami, it serves as a stark reminder of the constant tectonic and volcanic volatility in the region, which sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Stay tuned for further updates as monitoring agencies continue to assess Anak Krakatau’s activity levels.
