Devastating Floods and Landslides Wreak Havoc in Jammu and Kashmir
For the fourth consecutive day, relentless rainfall has pounded Jammu and Kashmir, causing widespread chaos and prompting massive rescue and evacuation efforts. The severe weather has led to deadly landslides, flash floods, and overflowing rivers, leaving thousands displaced and causing significant damage to infrastructure.
A rescue operation is ongoing near the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine after a landslide struck on Tuesday. The tragedy claimed the lives of nine pilgrims and left 21 others injured. The treacherous conditions have also affected other parts of the region. In the remote Margi area of the Kishtwar district, a flash flood swept away 10 houses and a bridge, though no casualties were immediately reported.
In the Kathua district, rescue teams are working to save over a dozen paramilitary personnel trapped by floodwaters in Lakhanpur village.
Most of the region's major rivers, including the Tawi, Chenab, Ujh, Ravi, and Basanter, are flowing dangerously above the flood-alert level. In the Kashmir valley, the Jhelum river has surpassed the flood-alert mark at Sangam in the Anantnag district and is nearing the alert level in Srinagar.
