Set in the opulent but morally decaying world of post-WWI Monte Carlo, Foolish Wives is a psychological drama about deception and vanity.
The Scheme: Sergius Karamzin, a grifter posing as a Russian Count, lives in a lavish villa with two "cousins" (actually fellow con artists). They finance their lifestyle through scams and a secret counterfeiting operation.
The Target: Karamzin sets his sights on Helen Hughes, the naive wife of a wealthy American diplomat. He uses theatrical "noble" charms and fake tears to seduce her, aiming to fleece her of her fortune.
A Web of Victims: Beyond Helen, the "Count" exploits others, including a hotel maid whom he promises to marry to steal her savings, and the vulnerable daughter of his counterfeiter associate.
The Climax: His double-crossing catches up to him when the jilted maid sets fire to the villa while Karamzin and Helen are inside. In a final act of cowardice, he jumps to safety first, leaving Helen behind to be rescued by her husband.
The Comeuppance: Exposed and humiliated, Karamzin meets a gruesome end when the counterfeiter catches him assaulting his daughter and kills him, dumping his body into a sewer. His "cousins" are subsequently arrested for their crimes.
