Russell (John Darrow), the son of nobleman Sir Gerald Courtney (Gilbert Emery), would rather party with young women than concentrate on his bright future in design. Sir Gerald is a little disappointed when Russell skips dinner with his father one evening to party with the gold-digging Berthine Waller (Margaret Livingston). Providence steps in as he considers his options for dealing with his errant son.
The London police are pursuing June (Betty Compson), a gorgeous but impoverished young woman who is about to adopt the oldest profession because of her desperation. As June exits a taxi across the street and is cornered by the police, Sir Gerald, who was watching his son leave with Berthine Waller from the first-floor window, watches. When she knocks on his door, he answers and greets her as the niece he had anticipated, assuring the police officers that she is a decent citizen. She tells Sir Gerald about her predicament, and he extends an invitation to dinner after they go. In order to keep his son out of Berthine's grasp, he next suggests paying June a thousand pounds.
As Russell departs Berthine and starts focusing on his architectural career, much to his father's satisfaction, June handles her job admirably. But there is a small problem: June has fallen for Sir Gerald instead of Russell. Russell is so distraught that he phones Berthine to come to his flat, which is upstairs in the same building as June's. June entices Russell to her apartment, where she gets him so inebriated that he passes out and spends the night there, after realizing that all of her labor has been unraveled in one evening.
When Berthine gets to Russell's place, she is being followed by Nikolai Rabinoff (Ivan Lebedeff), her ex-lover. Nikolai murders Berthine out of jealous rage. Russell wakes up the next morning to see that June has left, promising not to interfere with the father-son relationship. In addition, Russell is the primary suspect in Berthine's murder. Russell declines to use June as an alibi in order to avoid his father. June comes forward and confesses that Russell slept at her flat overnight in an attempt to save him. Assuming the worst, Sir Gerald betrays his love for June, devastating her but confirming her long-held concern that he would never be able to depend on her. After June leaves his home, Sir Gerald acknowledges his own error and makes a commitment to find her and spend the rest of his life with her after learning of the innocence of Russell's night in her apartment.
