Within the Christmas film genre, Santa Claus-themed movies are a separate subgenre. The basic plots of early Santa movies center on Santa visiting kids on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus is shown in the 1897 short film Santa Claus Filling Stockings merely filling stockings with goodies from his sack. In 1898, another movie called Santa Claus and the Children was produced. A year later, Santa Claus (also known as The Visit from Santa Claus in the UK) was made, a movie directed by George Albert Smith. Santa Claus comes into the room from the fireplace in this photo and starts trimming the tree. After that, he fills the stockings that the kids had previously hung on the mantle. He backtracks, looks over his work, then darts for the fireplace and vanishes up the chimney.
