Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) is an essential enzyme found throughout the body, with the highest concentrations located in the liver, bones, kidneys, and digestive tract. It plays a critical role in breaking down proteins and aiding bone mineralization.

A standard ALP blood test is widely used to evaluate liver function and detect bone disorders. Elevated ALP levels often signal blocked bile ducts, liver disease, or rapid bone turnover, which can occur in conditions like Paget's disease or healing fractures. Conversely, low levels are less common but can indicate malnutrition or a rare genetic disorder called hypophosphatasia.
