Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh | May 1, 2026 — A devastating accident at the Bargi Dam reservoir has claimed the lives of at least nine people after a state-operated cruise boat capsized during a sudden storm. Rescue teams continue to scour the waters of the Narmada River for several individuals who remain unaccounted for.

The Incident

On the evening of Thursday, April 30, the cruise vessel was carrying dozens of passengers when it was caught in an intense storm. Witnesses reported wind speeds reaching 60–70 kmph, which caused the boat to destabilize and capsize approximately 300 meters from the shore.

While initial reports on the number of passengers vary, authorities estimate between 31 and 45 people were on board at the time of the tragedy.

Rescue and Recovery Operations

The search mission has become a massive inter-agency effort involving the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and specialized divers brought in from Agra and Hyderabad.

  • Fatalities Confirmed: Of the nine bodies recovered so far, eight are women and one is a child.

  • Successful Rescues: Emergency teams have managed to pull between 22 and 24 survivors from the water.

  • Operational Challenges: Divers are facing extreme difficulties due to poor underwater visibility and jagged debris inside the vessel, which currently sits 20 feet below the surface.

In a particularly somber discovery, divers located the bodies of a mother and her four-year-old son from Delhi, found in a final embrace within the submerged wreckage.

Allegations of Safety Lapses

The tragedy has sparked immediate outrage over perceived safety failures. Survivors have come forward alleging that life jackets were either not provided or were only handed out after the vessel had already begun to sink.

Furthermore, questions are being raised about why the cruise was allowed to depart despite an IMD yellow alert predicting dangerous wind conditions for the region.

Official Response

The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered a high-level probe into the incident to investigate the safety gear allegations and the decision-making process of the tourism department. A compensation of ₹4 lakh has been announced for the families of each victim.
