The Lead: Relentless downpours have triggered catastrophic infrastructure failures and widespread "artificial flooding" across Assam's Barak Valley, leaving one dead from electrocution and sparking massive public fury over structural standards.

CACHAR, ASSAM — A massive infrastructure crisis has hit Assam’s Barak Valley following hours of continuous, torrential rain. In a major structural disaster, a significant portion of an under-construction bridge in the Cachar district gave way, collapsing straight into the roaring currents of the Jatinga River.

The collapse occurred simultaneously with a severe wave of flash and "artificial" flooding that has brought everyday life to a standstill in key urban zones across the region.

The ill-fated bridge, spanning between Purandarpur and Badarpur within the Barkhola constituency, was designed to act as a vital regional link. Estimated at an approximate cost of ₹10 crore, the project’s foundation stone was originally laid by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2024. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crack in the afternoon before the central structural framework detached entirely and plunged into the swollen riverbed.

Public Outrage & Demands for Accountability

The incident has sparked widespread fury among local residents, who converged near the site to protest. Questions are mounting over how a multi-crore public works asset could suffer a catastrophic failure before even reaching completion.

Community leaders are pointing toward the alleged use of substandard materials, unscientific civil engineering layouts, and a total lapse in quality oversight, prompting urgent demands for an immediate, high-level independent investigation.

Widespread Submersion: Silchar and Sribhumi Crippled

Beyond the structural disaster on the Jatinga River, continuous rain has entirely overwhelmed localized urban drainage networks, drowning major trading hubs and residential streets in deep floodwaters.

📍 The Silchar Crisis

Severe waterlogging has completely submerged key zones including the National Highway Point, Sonai Road, Shillong Patti, and Radhamadhab Road. The commercial daily market at the National Highway point was reported entirely underwater. Rainwater has breached safety margins, flooding houses and shops, heavily disrupting everyday commerce.

📍 The Sribhumi Inundation

The situation remains equally grim in Sribhumi town. Severe waterlogging was recorded across Ramani Mohan Road, Thana Road, PWD Bazaar, and Ramakrishna Mission Road. Floodwaters also accumulated outside the local BJP headquarters and deep within the high-security DC Bungalow Road layout.

Human Cost and Academic Disruption

Tragically, the human cost of the weather emergency escalated after an unidentified individual died due to accidental electrocution in the open floodwaters. Authorities have issued urgent public safety updates warning citizens to stay clear of submerged utility poles and sagging overhead wiring layouts.

Educational institutions across both towns have had to halt routine operations after water breached classrooms, compounding public anxiety. Emergency administrative teams are deployed to clear choked outlets, though weather models indicate that intermittent heavy downpours will persist, keeping the regional infrastructure under critical strain.
